Inside the factory
Sock factory tour: how socks are made in China
We filmed a full production day in a sock factory in southern China. Every stage a pair goes through before it reaches a box, in the order it happens, on the floor where it happens.

Arrival on the floor
This is a sock factory in southern China. Not a showroom, not a trade fair booth. This is the floor where the product actually gets made. Most brands never stand in a room like this. They pick a supplier from a website, send a deposit and wait to see what comes out of the container.
Knitting: one sock per machine
Everything starts in this hall. Each machine knits one sock at a time, from the cuff down to the toe. The yarn feeds from the cones on top, and the machine builds the whole tube in a single run. A plain sport sock comes off in a couple of minutes. A multi colour jacquard takes two or three times longer. Machine count times cycle time is what really sets your lead time.
Greige
What comes off the machine is not a finished sock yet. The toe is still open, and the colour is raw. The trade calls it greige. Each of these bags is one shift of output, waiting for the next station.
Linking the toe seam
That next station is linking, closing the toe seam. On cheap production this is done fast and flat, and you feel the ridge every time you wear the sock. Here it is done one pair at a time, by hand. The operator lines up every loop of the knit. This is the step that separates a sock you wear once from a sock a customer reorders.
Washing
Then the socks are washed. This is not a rinse. It is where the knit settles and the fabric finally softens into something you would put on your foot. Then into the extractor, and spun dry.
Boarding and sizing
After the wash, every sock goes onto a board. Heated metal forms, cut to each size in your range. The sock is pulled on, the heat sets it and it holds that shape all the way to the shelf. This is where your size chart stops being a spreadsheet and becomes a physical object. Get the boards wrong and every pair in the container is wrong.
Screen printing
In the next building, they print. Screen printing straight onto the sock. Every colour is mixed by hand in these buckets, and every colour needs its own screen and its own pass around the carousel. That is why a five colour design costs more than a one colour logo.
Silicone grip soles
Grip soles come off the same line. The gripper is silicone, pressed through a screen onto the underside of the sock, then cured. Pattern, coverage and thickness are yours to specify. This is the part clients ask about first.
Inspection and the sample wall
At the end, every pair is inspected, matched and bagged. And then there is this wall. Compression, crew, no show, ankle, terry, sport, medical. If you can describe the sock you want, someone in this building has already knitted it.
What we do with a factory like this
That is one factory, one day. This is what we do before a client's money is anywhere near the table. We find the factory that fits your product, we go and stand in it, we watch the line run and we meet the people who run it. Then we handle the samples, the production follow up and the shipping to your door. Votano Asia. So you never have to hope.
Common questions
What is a greige sock?
The sock exactly as it comes off the knitting machine: the toe is still open and the colour is raw. It only becomes a finished sock after linking, washing and boarding.
How long does it take to knit one sock?
A plain sport sock comes off the machine in a couple of minutes. A multi colour jacquard takes two or three times longer, and machine count times cycle time is what sets your lead time.
Why does a five colour print cost more than a one colour logo?
Every colour is mixed by hand and needs its own screen and its own pass around the printing carousel. Five colours means five screens and five passes.
What is boarding?
After washing, each sock is pulled onto a heated metal form cut to one size in your range. The heat sets the final shape, and that is how a size chart stops being a spreadsheet and becomes a physical sock.
